A 52-year-old security guard is standing trial on four counts
of attempting to defile, sexual assault and defilement of minors in a
Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State, on Tuesday, 24 June.
Four
months passed since Godspower Eva was detained on suspicion of sexual
assault and defilement of minors on March 19, 2014. During the first
arraignment the case file was duplicated and forwarded to the DPP for
advice. Finally, the court had received legal advice from the Lagos
State Director of Public Prosecutions directed that Eva be tried for
unlawful sexual assault and defilement of minors.
It was gathered
that the accused committed the offences on February 17, 2014 at his
residence.
He preliminarily conspired with the girls' 14-year-old
classmate, whom he had earlier also defiled, to invite three other 9,
10, and 12-year-old girls to his house with the promise of N100 each.
The
matter came to light after one of the defiled girls told her parent
about what had happened and the case was reported to the police.
However, Eva did not confess to the crime. The offence contravened
Sections 409 and 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
The defiled minors were sent to the Clinical Psychologist at the Lagos
State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, Lagos State, for counselling.
