The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Rahamon Ade Bello, who made this known during the second phase of the schools’ 2013/2014 convocation ceremony that took place yesterday, said the governing council,  in its support for excellence in the university, approved that two best graduating students with CGPA not less than 4.00 in each programmes be automatically employed as graduate assistants.

According to him, “The governing council of the university, for the promotion of excellence in the university, has just approved that commencing from this year, two best graduating students, with CGPA not less than 4.00 in each of our programmes, be automatically employed as graduate assistants. This will enable the retention of some of our best brains in the system, while fostering Ph.D training at the university.”

The convocation ceremony which its first phase took off on Tuesday, April 28, had in its second phase a total of 5,836 graduating students for the award of diploma, certificates and degrees, with 125 of the students finishing with first class honours, emerging from the various faculties ranging from Basic Medical Sciences, Clinical Sciences, Business Administration, Engineering, Law, Pharmacy Distant Learning Institute, Arts, Education to Social Sciences among others.

However, the third and final phase of the ceremony which comes up today, will witness the award of postgraduate degrees to successful students for the postgraduate diplomas, Masters, and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) even as three retired professors of the university will be conferred with emeriti professorship - Professor Olyayide Mojeed Abss, Professor Francis Fajemirokun and Professor Soga Sofola.

Three eminent Nigerians, Lt. General (rtd) Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma, Deacon Gamaliel Oforitsenere Onosode and Pastor (Dr.) Enoch Adejare Adeboye to be conferred with honorary degrees of the University of Lagos, for their immense contributions to education and quality of life.
Speaking at the event also, the Pro-Chancellor, Professor Jerry Gana, appealed to the federal government to consider a new proposed funding formula initiated by the institution’s governing council aimed at returning excellence to the university system, which will be forwarded to it soon.
“We as a university, particularly the governing council, are worried about the current mode of funding. And therefore, we plan to send a proposal to the federal government on a revised a model for their consideration.

“As of now, 90 per cent of the money that come from federal government is utilised mainly for the payment of salaries, very little for overhead, very little for capital. And therefore we are not able to sustain excellence. We would like to appeal that this new revised funding formula be well considered by the federal Government. It will be very, very useful in bringing back excellence into the university system,” Gana said.

In the same vein, Gana urged the graduating students to go out and remain a shining light and change agents that will take Nigeria to the next level by shunning corruption and letting their knowledge impact on their immediate environment.
